Our story

We believe!

flaregames was founded in 2011 by a group of industry veterans, including Klaas Kersting, the former CEO and founder of online games category leader Gameforge. Since then, significant venture backing – over $23 million to date – and rapid growth mean our games are enjoyed by millions of players across the globe. While more games were published or soft-launched but subsequently discontinued, here is a summary of how we came to be…

2011 First office secured Logo proudly unveiled flaregames announces itself to the world!

A new star was born in the gaming universe – the “flaregames” name was coined in line with the original company mission to build great mobile games that allow players to interact with their real-world surroundings in completely new ways.

April

First office secured in downtown Karlsruhe The logo – which remains in the present day – is proudly unveiled for the first time

April

T-Venture, the venture capital arm of Deutsche Telekom, invests up to 2 million euros in flaregames.

Keen Flare GmbH is founded in Frankfurt, a joint subsidiary between flaregames and keen games. As we now know, Keen Flare will go on to achieve royal success…

May

flaregames relocates once more in downtown Karlsruhe, this time to Kaiserstr. 146-148

Kilts and puzzles galore as BraveSmart, the company’s first game, releases on iOS and Android

August

A king emerges. Royal Revolt!, the first title in our flagship series, is released to the world. The TV spot hits screens in November.

December

The year is rounded off in style with Royal Revolt! winning “Best Mobile Game 2012” at the German Game Developers Awards (Deutscher Entwicklerpreis 2012).

2013 Royal Revolt! keeps picking up awards! Throne Wars is released

March

Continuing its successful haul, Royal Revolt! is chosen as best app in the “Entertainment” category of the Mobile Tech Awards 2013.

July

2014 Royal Revolt 2 releases globally Company raises further 9 million euros in funding Evoker releases on iOS and Windows, - now available on all plaforms Agents of Storm released Royal Revolt 2 in “Best of 2014” review on App Store

February

The long-awaited sequel to Royal Revolt! arrives! Royal Revolt 2 releases globally in more than a dozen languages and is already nominated in the “Best upcoming game” category of the International Mobile Game awards.

June

In a series B financing round, the company announces it has raised 9 million euros in funding.

July

In the first of a new line-up, the company announces a partnership with Subatomic Studios to launch a new game in the Fieldrunners universe.

August

The company joins forces with LA-based Superweapon to reveal a new mobile RTS with giant mechanized walkers. The game goes on to be named Dawn of Steel and releases in September 2015.

September

The company’s successful trading card game, Evoker, releases on iOS and Windows Phone, having previously released on Android only.

In the same month, yet another partnership is revealed, with the company teaming up with Remedy, best known for their AAA franchises such as Max Payne and Alan Wake, to announce Agents of Storm.

October

Shortly after announcing the partnership, Agents of Storm is released, introducing players to a team of agents on a mission to take down the evil Chimera Corporation

December

The year closes out with the Apple AppStore including Royal Revolt 2 in its “Best of 2014” review. Making the list of “other great games” as the one of the best 25 iOS game developers was a real honour.

January

The year started sweetly with Royal Revolt 2 making the Google Play Editors’ Choice list. With Royal Revolt! also featuring, flaregames are the only company with two entries in the list.

March

Royal Revolt 2 launches on South Korea’s market-leading chat platform Kakao, going straight to the No. 1 position in their download charts. Four days later, the game would enter the Top 5 of the “most downloaded app” charts of Google Play Korea.

June

A partnership deal with Limbic is announced, with flaregames teaming up with the San Francisco-based developers to release the next instalment of the Zombie Gunship franchise in 2016.

July

The company looks to South America for a new partnership, joining forces with Brainz of Bogota, Colombia. Coming 2016, prepare for a strategy RPG with innovative crafting mechanics.

September

Dawn of Steel makes its eagerly anticipated global launch on iOS devices, with the game receiving rave reviews on the AppStore.

November

The year is rounded off with yet another partnership announcement, this time with Emerald City Games and the next game in the Lionheart franchise.

2016 Kopla Games signed, Project Nonstop announced! Olympus Rising released Nonstop Knight released flaregames acquires Kopla Games Zombie Gunship Survival enters soft launch

February

A six-man gaming start-up from Tampere, Finland are welcomed into the family, with a partnership deal announced for Project Nonstop, a mobile action RPG later to be known as Nonstop Knight…

May

Ancient Greek themed action MMO Olympus Rising makes a legendary entrance onto the App Store and Google Play, complete with Editors’ Choice and front page features

June

An infinite adventure playable with one thumb, Nonstop Knight is released globally to much fanfare. The game is downloaded over 2 million times in just 4 days, making it the company’s biggest ever launch.

August

Following the celebrated success of Nonstop Knight, Kopla Games is acquired by flaregames. As part of the deal, Kopla Games will remain completely operationally independent and continue in their Tampere offices under the same company name.

Hugely anticipated and a #1 top grossing franchise, Zombie Gunship Survival enters soft launch, with new footage released showing the extent of the game’s evolution.
